In 1992, after the demise of the USSR, Kazakhstan became independent once more and celebrated its new freedom by adopting a new flag. This features a ground of sky blue, a traditional color of the nomadic peoples of Central Asia. This color was also used on the country’s previous national flag. The current flag displays a gold pattern on the hoist side, which is officially described as “the national ornamentation.” In the center of the flag is a golden sun with thirty-two rays. Flying below it is a species of eagle known in Kazakhstan as the “berkut,” or steppe eagle.
